Already back a week and have ya hit your peak yet? Staffrooms just love buzz words....two weeks off and it takes a week to get back 'up to speed' whatever that really means, don't ya just love them.

Talking of things you love....consultants! Now I worked quite a bit in a previous life with consultants and its good to know that the one today from the Education Authority was typically just as incompetent and useless as his salary is grossly over inflated. He was in to 'help' the ICT department with a marking strategy for a particular type of qualification. Now this qualification consists of an e-portfolio of evidence that the students make over about 18 months. The ICt dept are a little worried about students finishing putting this stuff together, ie the work has been mostly done but it needs to be evidenced in a particular way to get any marks. The advice was along the lines of getting the teacher to join it all together after the student has handed it in for marking to make sure the evidence matches the work done. Is it me? No, seriously, is it me being naive? I understand the conflict between being judges on results as the temptation to complete students work, ie cheat, but to have the EA's consultant offer this as best advice and practice......makes you think.

Starting to get a little worried now.....have applied for 6 jobs and not had a squeak back, although one is still ongoing. Suppose I can always big up my CV and exaggerate my importance...what else does it take to be a consultant?

Keep Aa'had

Just as I get started....

....then I'm stopped in my tracks by the Easter holidays. I know, I know I've only been at this lark for a few months but the way some teachers go on about recharging batteries and making sure they take the time off blah blah blah...its only 6 weeks since you last had a holiday! How do you think other hard working folk with their own long hours and daily stresses cope with only four weeks a year!! Still I'm not complaining, don't bite the hand that feeds and all that. Gail Godwin once remarked that "good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths theatre". Whilst I disagree that only one fourth of my time is spent in preparation I do love the theatre bit, the actual standing in a class and delivering the lesson...that's where the real magic is.

So today I bit the bullet and registered with some teaching agencies, four in total. Not that I'm being pessimistic about getting a job but it can't hurt to cover more bases, can it? Forms duly filled in, 3 million proofs of address, status, identity, history, shoe size etc etc now make me eligible to be considered for supply work...woo hoo!

So Easter holidays, ok so I had four days off (counting the weekend), now its back to an albeit reduced work load. The next couple of days I intend to spend getting my standards files sorted out and in some semblance of order. Unless of course the sun comes out then I'm off to play golf, it is the holidays you know! Next week I plan to dedicate to getting my lesson plans sorted for the first couple of weeks back, 16 lesson plans & resources & differentiation & homework's & extensions & starters & plenaries & support staff directions & so it goes on, each and every week. That's as well as the four weekly meetings & odd cpd sessions & occasional extra briefings, between the 0830 start and 5pm finish, the contribution to extra curricular activities, the 2 formal lesson observations each week, the completely pointless large assignment for the University of Contempt.

You know something has to suffer......this time its the completely pointless assignment...I think I'll just make mine up.....it will attain the same bland mark and set of useless feedback they all have done this year. Feedback from Uni is along the lines of....."Would have liked to see this in more detail" on a proposal of 500 words. They are just crap at telling me how to improve anything I do, actually strike that, they are just generally crap. Still next week there will be anther survey to fill out about my experiences to allow the Uni to 'listen to the students' ...as if it makes a difference. On the upside now they have my email address I get 57 weekly offerings from the "dept with f*ck all to do except send out sh*t by email" such as free Chlamydia tests, chaplaincy coffee mornings, poxy student union elections (no I really don't give a flying f*ck if d*ckhead A or d*ckhead B gets elected as sports and sexual deviancy officer), new student wellness session, win a £5 'kin Argos voucher for this survey chance, a message from the faceless ivory tower dweller otherwise known as the vice chancellor, free stop smoking services......why don't you all just f off and leave me alone you mindless f'ing waste of my tuition fees.

And breathe....

Keep Aa'had

Still I should count myself lucky, I attend an " 'A' rated Secondary Teacher Training Provider". Rumour has it the 'A' rating is for procedures and form filling than actual teaching standards....now that makes sense, like everything else its just spin. Once you delve beneath the surface, and in this place the veneer is especially thin, you find out what its really like.

Up and running

Well the wait is finally over I'm now 8 days into my second teaching practice and er its great. In the main the kids have been fine, I am re learning how to teach again....its amazing just how much you forget. I have charge of a year 10 form class.....ooohhh the responsibility! Actually they are proving to be really good....almost looking out for me....even got a compliment about my tie today.....which is a sure sign all hell will break loose tomorrow. The workload is completely mad, just a constant cycle of teach...feedback...plan but I still smile for most of the day so it can't be all that bad. I work with some fantastic people who ask for nothing in return for the help they give, I appreciate you all.

I managed to secure some post 16 experience at my local FE College.....not a bloody thing from the university of contempt, must still be sat on his arse. Have applied for 3 jobs now and heard not a thing, my application form and covering letter have passed my headteachers inspection with flying colours. Still, put in an application today so fingers crossed. On the jobs front we had a guy come in from a supply agency pitching for new recruits....it can't do any harm to register can it? Anybody have experience of supply (this decade preferably) to give me any tips?

Whilst not having much time to read one article did catch my eye, a speech to a heads conference by Dr Carol Craig, observing that schools risk turning pupils into narcissists by focusing on too much happiness. Dr Craig, head of the centre for Confidence and Wellbeing in Glasgow (I kid you not!). I surprised me that there was indeed a centre for wellness, especially in Glasgow which I thought had a life expectancy of about 50% of national average but I digress. As you may be aware for the past 2 years schools have had a statutory duty to promote their students wellbeing but now it seems to have gone to far. In some schools the words criticism and competition have been removed from the list of acceptable vocabulary so creating a raft of spoilt prima donnas unable to see beyond 'I'. As with everything else in life its all about balance......how do these, undoubtedly well paid, band wagon jumpers create massive cottage industries out of the latest fad, buzzword or initiative. Do we ever need a minister of common sense to take charge of these departments....no wonder education is so crap at times.

Anyway, its not all bad.......clocks go forward this weekend, 7 teaching days left till Easter!!

Keep Aa'had

Reading Week

Well as the title suggests this has been a reading week with no school so have spent the entire week on the golf course.

Some reading I did manage however was the Higher Education Funding Council who have promised £407 million to Uni's to "widen participation and cut the drop out rate". It goes on to state how monies should be used to help and support students with few or no qualifications cope with degree level studies. Ok, two points.....what the bloody hell are students with no qualifications doing on a degree course and why don't they invest the money into good teaching. This might just help improve the chances of students not quitting Uni through sheer boredom or the notion that these beholders of academia sit in ivory towers and talk in a language aimed about three feet over their heads.
Under the scheme the Uni of Teeside is to be given £11 million to tackle this. Now 11 million is a lot of cash by any body's standards.....if you break it down it would fund the tuition fees of over 1'200 people who might actually want to do a 3 year degree, rather than spending it on people who don't or quite simple can't. What is the obsession with pushing people further up the education ladder when actually it is much better to advise people that this is indeed their floor and would they kindly get off. 11 million quid would secure the jobs of over 400 people for a year at Nissan who were made redundant, it could pay an average mortgage on Teeside for a year for over 3000 people...you start to get the picture!

I can only speak from my experience at the University of Contempt but its no wonder people drop out. If it were an animal the vet would have shot it a long time ago, if it were a private business, operating in the real world it wouldn't need a recession to kill it off, ineptitude and incompetence would have done the job many moons ago. The bit I don't understand is, now that we as students pay for this crap, why is it accepted? Why is this place still untouchable, why do we have no right of recourse.....value for money...how would you measure that in an education setting?

Prison interview today....now that was an experience, but hey the sun shone and it didn't look such a bad place. Everybody seemed really friendly on the staff side so I just have to wait for security clearance.....minimum 22 days wait, will keep you posted on this one but fingers crossed.

Keep Aa'had

And the winner is......

The lady who stood in front of all the student and NQT teachers to deliver a session on pupils self abusing and delivered the line, in all seriousness: "...more information can be found at www.selfharm.com forward slash wrists....." Well, I was just creased....totally gone....pure unintended genius at its very best!

Flags out part 2....Uni is finished, no more teaching sessions, we have a reading week this week, which coincidentally is the week after the assignment was due in...you work it out! Two possibilities, they were either generous with the rose tinted glasses on the response form or have no idea what crap teaching consists of, or maybe it is just me....nah impossible.

So its half term week and the Uni decides we are so busy preparing for our 2nd teaching placement and the 2 assignments due by Friday that we only need one day in this week. Awesome! The lecture on Monday morning was rushed because the lecturer had to teach somewhere else that clashed, the second lecture was cancelled or maybe just didn't exist. What a life of riley these lecturers lead and to top it all off in 2 weeks we are having a reading week....they get more bloody holidays than a Thomas Cook rep. I am paying for this sub standard pile of steaming horse sh*t......why can't a University follow a standard school day and teach us properly.......all we get is Module XYZ, taught study 6 hours, self study 397 hours.....it is a complete disgrace and an utter farce.

Special mention to the finance people at the University of Contempt, they decided I was part time so missed out on a £500 bursary.....I now have to wait till next month....'kin hell man!

Nobodyat the Uni has bothered to do anything about my non existant post 16 experience yet......again, pure lazy arsed entities.

On the upside I headed off to Scotland to play some golf and even the sun shone...life as it should be!

Keep Aa'had

Geordie Pride

Given to me by the kids today:

50 Degrees: Southerners turn on their heating. More than 98 percent of convicted criminals are bread users.
2. Fully HALF of all children who grow up in bread-consuming households score below average on standardized tests.
3. In the 18th century, when virtually all bread was baked in the home, the average life expectancy was less than 50 years; infant mortality rates were unacceptably high; many women died in childbirth; and diseases such as typhoid, yellow fever, and influenza ravaged whole nations
4. More than 90 percent of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread.
5. Bread is made from a substance called "dough." It has been proven that as little as one pound of dough can be used to suffocate a mouse. The average Britain eats more bread than that in one month!
6. Primitive tribal societies that have no bread exhibit a low incidence of cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, and osteoporosis.
7. Bread has been proven to be addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water to eat begged for bread after as little as two days.
8. Bread is often a "gateway" food item, leading the user to "harder" items such as butter, jelly, peanut butter, and even cold cuts.
9. Bread has been proven to absorb water. Since the human body is more than 90 percent water, it follows that eating bread could lead to your body being taken over by this absorptive food product, turning you into a soggy, gooey bread-pudding person.
10. Newborn babies can choke on bread.
11. Bread is baked at temperatures as high as 240 degrees Celsius! That kind of heat can kill an adult in less than one minute.
12. Most bread eaters are utterly unable to distinguish between significant scientific fact and meaningless statistical babbling.

In light of these frightening statistics, we propose the following bread restrictions:
1. No sale of bread to minors
2. A nationwide "Just Say No To Toast" campaign, complete celebrity TV spots and car stickers.
3. A 300 percent VAT level on all bread to pay for all the societal ills we might associate with bread.
4. No animal or human images, nor any primary colors (which may appeal to children) may be used to promote bread usage.
5. The establishment of "Bread-free" zones around schools.

4 weeks in.....

Well, credit where its due, Uni on Monday was actually helpful. The ICT specific session looked at our first assignment on inclusion and gave us some scaffolding about things to consider. One question did make me smile, the lecturer asked "Why do children go to school?", and all the usual answers trotted out blah blah so, perhaps it was a combination of Monday and working all night, I actually found myself with a hand in the air, "Its where they feel safe, or perhaps to get a hot meal" I offered. Just for a split second the tumbleweed rolled on through the room, as if one it seemed to be making up its mind whether to laugh or shake its head. "Er, yes possibly" replied the lecturer and then he was gone, looking for a more middle class answer amongst the safe student tables.....funny thing inclusion.
The generic theme for the day was indeed that of inclusion...(can you see a master plan forming!), two lectures one from Mr Inclusion and the other, with the aid of some of her students, from a head at a special school. I did want to ask that by terming a school 'special' would that not by inference make the rest un special but time and place, you know. Well she told her story and the children did there bit and they all got a clap and people went aaaahhhh so hats off all round, inclusion sorted!

School was again the place to be this week, observations have been stepped up this week to eight from a possible ten. Generic day was all about...go on have a guess...yeah inclusion and SEN....I must admit the figures of kids arriving in year 7 with a reading age of below nine really shocked me, 6 years in primary education and they can't read to an acceptable level en masse. I know its not that simple and yes, thanks for asking, I too was from an area of significant social deprivation so do understand that strong lager is higher up the shopping list than a bloody book. Anyway I found out one of the classes I'm going to be teaching, a group of Year 7's for music technology.....how cool is that, I get to play with sequencers and make dance music.

Last year the DCSF spent £70 million on advice....that's an obscene figure by anybody's standards. Imagine investing that much in new teachers.....you'd create over 3000 posts...now that would make a real difference.

TDA

I passed one of those TDA adverts on a billboard today.....the science one with all the kids gasping in amazement at some experiment. Today we were put into groups to create resources for a topic of our choice which will be put on a shared drive so we can all use each others resources. Great idea, except that some lazy gits will do nowt so the resources should be stipulated as put in before you get out. Anyway as most people will have spent most of last practice making resources don't we already have loads we can share.....should we not be looking at more pressing matters, actually being taught something by people we pay to teach us....I know...radical or what, dont tell the DFES 'cause it may catch on. Still I my group managed to do a runner at coffee time so not all the morning was wasted.
Now you might imagine that learners in training need to absorb lots of information on an intense and creative professional year at University. Not a bit of it, Monday afternoon approximately forty of us from ages 21 to about 50 were asked to stand up in front of the class and read a couple of paragraphs from a photocopied sheet so the tutor could hear us read. What the f@&k! This is from an A rated Ofsted University (go on ask me A rated for what 'cause it ain't the quality of the bloody teaching). I have a sneaking suspicion I know where incompetent teachers end up, the ones that jump before the GTC gets them.

Update on my missing post 16 teaching experience.....it now appears that I don't actually have to teach to gain the required knowledge, as long as I'm in the room to observe that will be OK, I'm advised. That's all right then and I'm actually paying for this??
Figures out this week showed that 47.6% of pupils achieved the golden egg of 5 a*-c gcse's including maths & english, whilst 65.3% achieved 5 a* - c gcse's without maths and english. So overall 112.9% of pupils achieve 5 a*-c gcse's........er?

I've decided to treat you, the lucky reader, to a tip now and again, to impart my ICT knowledge gained here at the University of Contempt, to make your day just a little worthwhile. So, for today it goes like this......you start typing madly only too look up three paragraphs later and find you accidentally hit the caps lock key....never fear, simply highlight the text in the wrong case, press shift & f3 together and hey presto.....weep no more!

Take time out to visit Frank Chalk he posts this week that:
Chalk's Second Law: "The frequency of 'buzzwords' and jargon in a person's speech is inversely proportional to their general competence" He must have met the guy that lectures us!

Keep Aa'had

Double Take

Whilst wandering through the Education Guardion on 21 jan the headline read...."Twinned With Bagdad", was it just me that looked twice expecting to find their school?

Placement begins

Well Uni kicked off the second week, the generic lesson being on progression and continuity the afternoon devoted to subject knowledge. The afternoons are so frustrating, so much to do but the Lecturer seems to do so little. What do I know?
Tuesday brought the first day at my second placement, according to the league tables its bottom within the Local Authority for its A*-C ratings and yeah has well above average for free school meals but I actually found it to be great. Both mentors seem like cracking people, the training seems well planned and structured, the discipline I saw in lesson seemed fine.
Early days I realise but I have a real sense of optimism about this placement, just like something feels right.....we'll review that statement in the weeks to come!
Friday was one of those, should I stay in bed or go to Uni type of days. Well 6.30 saw me leaving night shift and 7.30 had me at McD's for breakfast and the day didn't get much better after that. Of the tasks set in Monday's lecture three groups managed to complete them, 50% of people elected to stay in bed and whilst it is good to catch up with Uni mates it isn't half boring to have to sit through the lecture to do that. Idle, or maybe not, threats by the Lecturer about letters of non attendance going in to files...blah blah blah same old crap. Now I'm sure we've been here before but to me the way to get good attendance is to make your lesson enjoyable to be in, to make people leave thinking, yeah I learnt something there, really enjoyed that etc. Or you could stick a note in their file or not give them such a good reference as an attendee, makes you think. Three years on, you've shelled out nearly £10k on course fees and the lecturer gives you a bland reference cause you didn't attend his crap lectures.....who wins in that scenario. Still at least they had the last laugh, made the difference between you getting that job you really needed...never know might even get your house repossessed, or take a leap of a big bridge, yeah you really showed tham who's the daddy...it makes me proud to know you.
Talking about employment, the job hunting season will soon be upon me....admit to being slightly apprehensive because way more people than jobs will qualify. Funnily my mentor at School raised this point with the University, why they insist on producing more graduates than jobs will exist in the area. Apparently the University take their lead from the Government on numbers, which is crap speak for we are gonna cram as many people in as possible cause its money for us. So what if they don't get a job, not our problem, we've had our dosh....two fingers pal.
As I'm building up to a rant I may as well mention that the I paid a visit to the Placement Office about my lack of post 16 training, their advice...sort it out yourself with the School its easier than them actually getting off their arse, not like its their job or anything. I actually have to remind myself that I actually pay for this shambles, customer service, value for money....not in a University...heads down arse up seems to be the way they do things here. So I need to find 3 full days of post 16 teaching, I have no contacts in this field, the School I'm at can't really assist and the bloke at the Uni paid to arrange my placement thinks it would be better for me than him to ring colleges. Is it me??? Maybe I should put an ad in the TES.......

Student Seeks Post 16 Teaching Experience

6 half days needed

Must fit in with current teaching timetable

If you can accomodate more than 1 Student

Ring the Bloke with the fat arse at the University of Contempt

Oh roll on Monday........sausage & egg with a cup of tea......2 sugars please! The University states that I only have "to engage with the module". In real terms this means I can write 4000 words of crap, wasting my time, the time of people in School who assisted me with it, the markers time and possibly an external markers time. Surely common sense would have made the module optional then the really keen students could have taken it and I could have put my feet up, safe in the knowledge that participation had been avoided. Still, you have to admire them, preparing us to jump through needless hoops can only be of benefit in our careers as teachers.
My first week back is spent at University, as you would expect a busy week no doubt filled with sessions on looking at my first teaching practice and equipping me with a range of strategies to take into my second . Er, no a total of 6 hours of generic lectures (3 1/2 spent on finding my first job) and one 15 minute session to review the last placement. Needless to say the 15 minute review takes place on a day I'm not in Uni, timed to finish in rush hour so do I spend £6 to get there and an hour to get home for a 15 minute chat that you know will be useless and just a ticky box session for somebody somewhere.
Having moaned about of of that my second placement is in what is termed a 'challenging' secondary school and I can't wait. No really, I'm looking forward to starting, if I can teach their I can teach anywhere me thinks.
Well I'll bid you all a happy new year, raise a glass to drinking irresponsibly if thats your thing and to 2009...bring it on!

It all starts here.

w/c 15 September 2008

The first week back at University and its comforting to know that like an old shoe it is exactly where you thought you'd left it. We are now teachers and no longer students, though never really felt like I was a proper student to begin with so am assuming the transition to teacher won't be so traumatic.
Question of the day had to be, and was asked in all seriousness, in a debate about potential professional dilemmas..."If a pupil punched you is it ok to punch them back?" This person will be in a classroom in 6 days from now...is it just me?

Sometimes I find I look around the room and see the people I have known for the duration of the course. Two in particular i think will make great teachers, some will do a fine job, some are still not quite ready to make the transition and some should have been intercepted before they got this far. In what promises to be a fantastically busy year I now draw a line under my journey to get hear, with thanks to those that helped, inspired and convinced me that the sacrifices made would be all worth it for this chance. To the person that didn't I can only offer that your failings were so far reaching in every level of your professional capacity they have provided me with a permanent reference on what not to do to become a good teacher.

Our first proper lecture was given by the Associate Dean no less and I guess I owe him an apology. I was heard to mumble something along the lines of, "so what can he tell us relevent to the cutting edge of education in secondry schools today?" Like I say an apology is due, I guess he does know his stuff and humour too.....oh how he spoilt us!

I received myregistration number and I now have my QTS tests booked for Friday 26, so three tests, three hours....yeah should be no problem.

Still no modules online....business as usual.
